Matt Milam, Sr. Co-Founder Of Milam Stores Dies November 12 Funeral services for V. Matt Milam, Sr., 79 year old prominent Winn Parish businessman, who died unexpectedly Thursday night in a local hospital, were held Saturday, November 14, 1964 in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. S. J. Sjolander, Dr. W. L. Holcomb, and the Rev. John Kitchingham officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were Harper Terrill, Homer Parker, Reggie Gates, Joe Holmes, Bob Buchanan, Luther Keaton, all of Winnfield; L. C. Shows, Jonesboro, and Weldon Middleton of Natchitoches. Mr. Milam was a lifelong resident of Winn Parish, son of the late W. M. Milam and Ella Peddy Milam, pioneer settlers and civic leaders of this area. He was co-founder of W. M. Milam & Son, Inc., and a deacon of the First Baptist Church, and he pioneered many rural churches throughout the parish, and assisted in the education of many ministerial students. Mr. Milam had served on the Winnfield Utilities Commission since January, 1945 when the City purchased the utility set-up from a private concern. He was a member of Central Louisiana Hospital Board, Vice President of Southwestern Wholesalers of Shreveport, and served in numerous appointive state positions. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helene Thomoson Milam; one son, V. Matt Milam, Jr.; one daughter, Mrs. R. C. Byrnes; and five grandchildren, Michael Milam, Tommy Milam, Matt Milam III, Helene Byrnes, and Lynn Byrnes, all of Winnfield.
