James Robertson Miller, pioneer Baptist minister, Confederate Veteran, and Mason, died at his home in New Verda, Monday morning, June 29th, after a lingering illness. He was 84 years of age at the time of his death. Brother Miller was born near Gansville in Winn Parish, Nov. 9, 1847 and his entire life was spent in Winn, Grant, and Rapides Parishes. He served as a Baptist minister for over 30 years. Retiring from the ministry about 15 years ago, he has since conducted a general merchandise store at Verda. Funeral services were held at the Marshall Cemetery near VErda, June 30th, by Rev. Mercer of Pineville. Interment was made in the Marshall Cemetery under the auspices of Colfax Lodge of Masons of which the deceased was a member, assisted by members of Verda and Alexandria. He is survived by six sons and four daughters, H. F., and J. W. Miller of Colfax, John Miller, Farley Miller, LeCompte, Mose Miller, Minden, Mrs. Hettie Morris, Dry Prong, Mrs. Cora LaBat, Sims, Mrs. Clara Maxwell, Pollock, Miss Susie Miller, El Dorado. A brother, Rev. J. S. Miller, Camden, Ark., and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Quinalty, Montgomery, also survive him.
