Mixon Dies After Long Illness Joe J. Mixon, 68, of Winnfield, member of a prominent pioneer Winn Parish family, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 1976 in a local hospital after a long illness. Last rites were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 1976 in Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Gage and Rev. Calvin Phelps officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery. A native of Dodson, Mixon graduated from Louisiana State University as a First Lieutenant in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He entered the armed forces at Camp Lee, Va., in the Quartermaster Corps, and served in places all over he world, including flights over the hump in India to Southern China. After retiring as Lieutenant Colonel, he taught agriculture at Jena, worked as assistant Parish Agent in Lincoln and Claiborne Parishes, served as principal at Jena and retired from Charenton, La. School in St. Mary Parish. He was a Master Mason and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Dessie Lee Bossier Mixon, of Winnfield; two brothers, Jack Mixon of Lillie and Dan Mixon of Goldsboro, N. C.; six sisters, Mrs. Bertha Stovall of Dodson, Mrs. Clarice Patrick of Oil City, Mrs. Helen Curran of Picayune, Miss., Mrs. Mamie Simmons of Dodson, Mrs. Corinne Crawford of Winnfield, and Mrs. Mary Ruty Keckler of Lake Charles, and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Kermit Simmons, Harry Simmons, Ed Crawford, Ellis Williams, E. J. Buchanan, Ray Jenkins, Harper Terrill, and Jim Russell.
