All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: August 16, 1928 Winn Parish Enterprise Mrs. Riley Melton of Route Two, Dies Saturday Mrs. Riley Melton, age 39 years, died at her home, Winnfield, Route 2, last Saturday, August 11th. Mrs. Melton, before her marriage twelve years ago to Mr. Melton, was Miss Mamie Gelvin, of Eden. She was a true Christian, having joined the Methodist Church in her early youth and being left an orphan at a young age, cared for her orphan sisters and brother. She was a beloved teacher in LaSalle and Winn Parishes for ten or twelve years before her marriage to Mr. Melton, June 11, 1916. Mrs. Melton is survived by her husband; three sons, Bowman, age 11, James Edward, age 9, Huey, age 5; one baby daughter, Mamie Elizabeth, a few hours old at the time of her death; three sisters, Mrs. Brasie Crook and Mrs. Dr. Smith, Zenoria; Mrs. Ab Tingle, Monroe; and one brother, J. F. Gelvin, Trout. She was also a cousin of Mr. S. N. Thomas of Winnfield and leaves a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist Church, Winnfield. The Rev. Alwin Stokes, Presbyterian minister of Ferriday, officiated. Interment was made in the Winnfield Cemetery. Friends and relatives out of the parish who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Gelvin and family, Trout, La.; S. B. Thomas and family, Tullos, La.; Mr. J. C. Crooks and family, Mrs. Dr. G. P. Smith, Zenoria, La.; Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Tingle, West Monroe, La.; Walter Cadenhead and family, Haynesville, La.; J. U. Greer and family, Mittie Eskew, Trout, La.; Wright Melton and family, Archie, La.; Bill Melton and family, Minden, La.; Thomas Burch, Tyler, Texas; and a great many others.
