Silas L. Morris died at 4 a.m. January 24, 1928, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. A. Carothers, 1015 Arlington Ave., Jackson, Miss. Dr. Morris was the eldest child of Captain Darl and Cyrena E. Morris and was born in Rankin County, Miss., July 31, 1854. He moved with his parents to Winn Parish in 1858. In 1876 he entered Mississippi College and afterwards attended Soule's Business College in New Orleans, and in 1878 removed to Texas. He became a Baptist preacher before he reached his majority. In 1881, he entered the senior class of Waco University, deferred his graduation, but was unanimously elected alumnus. He served the Beulah, New Zion, and Marlin churches of Texas; was pastor of the church at Winnfield, La., and later of Atlanta, Georgia. He was for a number of years editor of the "Guardian," a Baptist monthly magazine, and was employed as a prohibition lecturer in the Southern states at the time of his death. Rev. Silas L. Morris was married in 1879 to Mary J. Davis, of Robertson County, Texas. She died soon after their marriage. He was married a second time April 30th, 1885, to Hallie Byrd Burleson, only daughter of the Rev. Dr. Rufus C. and Georgia Burleson, of Waco, Texas. Dr. Morris is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Georgialene Carothers, of Jackson, Miss., and one son, Mr. Lawrence Morris of Atlanta, Ga.; also one brother, N. D. Morris of Pineville, and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Bell, of Dry Prong, La., and Mrs. E. S. Murrell of Colfax, La.
