Mr. Moss was born March 2, 1903 in Winnfield, Louisiana, the son of the late Judge Cas Moss and Ophelia Wallace Moss. He attended the Winn Parish schools and graduated from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1923. Mr. Moss was an outstanding athlete and was selected for all-conference football honors three consecutive years. After graduation he taught school in Springhill, Jennings and in North Carolina. He attended LSU and graduated from Tulane Law School in 1933. In 1934 he organized Winnfield's First Federal Savings and Loan Association and served as President until 1982, an as Chairman of the Board until his death. He served as President of the Louisiana Savings and Loan League and as Director of the United States League of Savings and Loan Association. He was elected to the Louisiana Legislature in 1941. He held a commission in the U. S. Army Reserve and was called to active duty at the outbreak of World War II. He served as Judge Advocate of the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps in the European Theater of Operations until 1945, attaining the rank of Colonel. Mr. Moss later served as a member of the Veterans Affairs Commission of the State of Louisiana for eight years, and also as State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a member of the Public Affairs Research Council for the State of Louisiana, and on the board of Trustees of Louisiana College and Grambling State University. He received the Louisiana College Distinguished Service Award in 1979. He was a charter member of the Winnfield Rotary Club and a staunch supporter of the Girl Scouts of America. He also supported many endeavors of the Winn Parish schools and other civic organizations. He was named Outstanding Citizen of Winn Parish in 1984-85 and elevated to the Winn Parish Hall of Fame. Mr. Moss was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of the Adult Sunday School Department for many years. He was chairman of the building committee for the church sanctuary. He is survived by his wife, Claire Boone Moss of Winnfield; one sister, Ophelia Moss Storey of Winnfield; one son, Cas B. Moss, and one daughter, Dale Moss Russell, both of Winnfield. Survivors also include six grandchildren, John G. Russell, George W. Moss, and Mary Claire Moss, of Baton Rouge, Sarah Junkin of Los Angeles, California, Meredith Bates and Claire Russell of Winnfield. Other survivors include his three great-grandchildren. Services will be held under the direction of Southern Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in First Baptist Church of Winnfield. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Cas D. Moss scholarship fund at First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Winnfield.
