Funeral is Held Here Tuesday for W. P. Martin, 64

William Pearl Martin, 64, retired Winnfield petroleum wholesaler, retailer,
and automobile dealer, died at 2 a.m. Monday in Tri-State Sanitarium,
Shreveport.  He had been in failing health about 10 months.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church
here, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. P. M.
Caraway and Rev. Alwin Stokes.  Burial was in the family plot in Winnfield
Cemetery under direction T. J. Drewett Funeral Home in Mansfield.

Mr. Martin, a native of Wadesboro, North Carolina, was born June 20, 1887, the
son of the late Samuel P. and Mary Ann Martin.  He grew to young manhood in
North Carolina and came to Winnfield at the age of 19 as an employee of the
Louisiana and Arkansas Railway.  He was an engineer with L & A from 1909 to
1922.

He quit the railroad to go into business here, operating Martin's Service
Station and the Standard Oil wholesale agency here, which he did for 28 years. 
He also operated the Hudson car agency here from 1937 to 1950, when he retired
from active business.  Shortly before his retirement, he build the buildings
now housing the A & P store and Court House Pharmacy on Jones Street in
Winnfield.

He was a member of the First Baptist church, a Mason, and a former member
of the Elks.

Mr. Martin was married in September, 1915, to the former Miss Ethel Allen,
who survives him.

Other survivors are one son, Dr. Roy V. Martin, two daughters, Mrs. Harold
Swilley of Winnfield and Miss Virginia Martin, a student at Louisiana State
University; one sister, Mrs. Fred Horne, of North Carolina; five brothers,
John Beaman Martin, Clarence T. Martin, and A. B. Martin, all of North
Carolina, T. C. of Minden, and E. S. of Winnfield, Route 1; six grandsons and
a host of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers were Ray McEachern, Sam Brian, Jewell Maxey, Kelly
Peterson, Frank Shaw, Jr., Eugene Love, Elmo Frazier, and Dr. J. S. McClane.

Honorary pallbearers were J. R. Heard, Jesse Corley, Dr. Roy Wright, E. C.
Frazier, Ira Cole, Dr. John T. Mosley, Dr. George Rodgers, A. L. Sullivan, Dr.
A. W. Radescich, W. H. Cameron, Mayor D. C. Allen, H. L. Turner, W. O.
Averett, Mack L. Branch, B. W. Bailey, J. E. Carter, J. W. Capps, L. R.
Thomas, A. Leonard Allen, H. E. Machen, Rayford Lewis, George H. Harrison, G.
W. Jones, J. R. Madden, and Carroll Aiken.

Among out of town guests attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Martin
and Leon Gray, Minden; Mrs. Mae Martin, Springhill; Mrs. T. J. Drewett,
Mansfield; Mrs. Joe Gregg, Mrs. Charlie Jones, Miss Ella Nash, and Mrs. J. C.
Breaux, all of Baton Rouge.
