Harvey was a great baseball player in his early years, having gone to spring training with the St. Louis Cardinals "Gas House Gang" in the 1930s. During batting practice, the manager chastised Harvey for not allowing some of the Cardinal regulars to hit the ball. The manager explained to Harvey that in spring training, he wanted his players to be able to hit the ball and get their timing down. Intent on striking them out, Harvey told the manager that he was from Winnfield, Louisiana and his job was to strike people out. After having struck out Leo Durocher, Joe Medwick, and some others, Harvey packed his bags and came back home to Winnfield)
