Vander Mayes Funeral Services Held In Sikes H. Vander Mayes, 71, of Sikes, died in a Winnfield hospital Sunday, August 12, 1951, following a stroke last week. He had been in ill health for many years. Funeral services were conducted at the Sikes Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the pastor, Rev. James Taylor, officiating. Burial was in the Sikes Cemetery. A member of a prominent Winn Parish family, Mr. Mayes was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Drew Mayes, among the early settlers of this area. He was born and reared and lived his entire life in the Sikes Community, and was a retired logging contractor. His first wife, Elizabeth Newsom, died in 1947. About a year ago he married Mrs. W. R. Sikes, who survives him. He also leaves two sons, Machel Mayes of Sikes and S. A. Mayes of Delhi; three daughters, Mrs. L. O. Fisher of Monroe, Mrs. H. P. Tharpe of Delhi, and Mrs. H. M. Brown of Alexandria; two brothers, W. S. Mayes of Sikes and Willie Mayes of Columbia; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers were Clarence Thompson, Stanley Holley, C. M. Newsom, Curtis Mayes, Woodrow Fordham, Earl Ursery.
