Nelms, 77, Of Montgomery Is Buried Tuesday John L. Nelms, prominent Montgomery businessman and civic leader, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday in an Alexandria hospital. He was 77. A native of Jonesboro, Miss., Nelms moved to Grant Parish in 1909. He was well known as a lumberman and landowner. He was past member of the Montgomery Town Council and the Grant Parish School Board. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Montgomery and the Colfax Banking Company, and a member of the First Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Montgomery at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. M. L. Davis of Pollock and the Rev. Charles Scott of Montgomery officiating. Burial was in the Old Castor Cemetery in Bienville Parish with the Rev. R. W. Singleton of Ringgold assisting. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Creola Cooke Nelms; one daughter, Mrs. W. I. Bobo, Jr., of Ringgold; two sons, Everett Nelms of Montgomery and Charles Helm of Brookhaven, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. Pugh Pitner of New Albany, Miss.; and four grandchildren. Pallbearers were T. O. Dollar, Tom Harrison, Howard Kilpatrick, Will Fletcher, Kent Wardlow, and W. T. McCain. Honorary pallbearers were directors of the Bank of Montgomery and the Colfax Banking Company, members of the Montgomery Town Council, and members of the Grant Parish School Board.
