Don Newsom, 22 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Newsom of Winnfield, died in a head on collision near Liberty, Miss., Thursday night of last week. According to reports, young Newsom, who was driving a loaded cattle truck, was returning to Baton Rouge when a car with three Negro occupants rand head on into his vehicle. The other car was 26 inches over into Newsom's traffic lane, it was said. Fire enveloped the two vehicles and two of the Negroes died instantly in the accident. All bodies were badly burned. The third Negro died the following day. Newsom, a 1958 graduate of Winnfield High, would have been a senior at Louisiana State University this fall semester. He was engaged to be married on August 25 to Miss Martha Lasyone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lasyone, former residents of Winnfield. A popular local youth, he was a member of the Winnfield Riding Club, the Louisiana State University Block and Bridle Club, and of the First Assembly of God, Laurel Heights. He was a first lieutenant in the LSU ROTC. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Southern Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. E. D. Roach, the Rev. S. E. Lum, and the Rev. C. F. Kottonbrook officiating. Burial was in the Beech Creek Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were Glen Fogger, Gurvy Gunter, Lyle Wayne Thompson, Aubry McCarty, Shove Holmes, Edward Crawford, Ronald Lasyone, and Don Chandler. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elton E. Newsom, and one sister, Mrs. Judy Newsom, all of Winnfield.
