Newsom Is Claimed By Death Funeral services for S. R. Newsom, who died of apoplexy at his home in Hickory Valley, 10 o'clock Sunday morning, January 13, were held at the Shady Grove Church Monday. The Rev. L. D. Emmons, lifelong friend of the deceased and former pastor of the Shady Grove Church, had charge of the services. The Rev. Emmons spoke consoling words to the bereaved family and used as his text 1 Cor: 15, "Concerning our Savior in the resurrection and our life to its conclusion." Interment was in the Sikes Cemetery. A large encourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the last rites. S. R. Newsom was born at Hickory Valley February 23, 1849, being 79 years, 10 months, and 20 days old at the time of his death. He was a self-made man, being, being a great reader, a student, a teacher nad acted as a physician when needed by his friends. Mr. Newsom played in important part in the affairs of Winn Parish. He was a moderator of Shady Grove Association 13 years, and had acted as clerk before that time. He was a member of the Police Jury four years. He was kind and considerate; a member of the Baptist Church for 50 years and led a devoted and consecrated life to the service of the Lord. March 1st, 51 years ago, he was married to Mary Wallace, to which union ten children were born, three preceding the father in death. The following survive him: his widow, six sons, W. W. Newsom, Decatur, Miss.; G. M. Newsom, Hickory Valley; A. H. Newsom and J. R. Newsom, Monroe; L. T. Newsom, Bossier City, S. R. Newsom, Jr., Monroe; and one daughter, Mrs. H. V. Mayes. The following relatives and friends from out of town attended the funeral rites: Mrs. C. C. Jarrell, Columbia; Dr. L. R. Newsom and Henry Machen, Monroe; Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Newsom, Lewis and Howard Newsom of Crowville; Mr. and Mrs. Childress Armstrong and Mrs. J. H. Hart of Delhi; Mrs. Wesley Crump, Oak Grove; Mrs. Cleo Wade, jena; and the following from Winnfield: Mrs. N. C. Sowers, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Peters, Mrs. Ellen Sowers, Mrs. C. M. Sanders, DeWitt Sanders, John Sowers, Mrs. Howard Sowers, Mrs. O. S. Wallace, and Mrs. E. E. Kidd.
