All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** White Man Kills Negro Tie Maker And Surrenders Rufus Ross of the Tannehill community walked into the Sheriff's office last Saturday afternoon and surrendered himself to deputy sheriff, G. M. Walsworth admitting that he shot and killed John Nichols, negro tie maker about 45 years old, near the Tannehill station five miles north of Winnfield Thursday afternoon. Nichols body was discovered Saturday morning by some children who reported the grusome find to nearby residents. The body had lain face down in the narrow unused roadway from 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon until found Saturday morning. Nichols had a bad record, was reported to have been impudent and over bearing and had served a term in the state penitentiary on a charge of arson. In a statement to the officers Ross said that he and the negro had had some trouble and he had been threatened by the negro. Ross was locked up but was released Sunday at noon after furnishing bail.
