W. Oglesby, 91, a resident of Winnfield for 63 years, died Tuesday night after a brief illness. He was a native of Tennessee. Long a civic leader, he had served as District Court Judge and Court of Appeals Judge, state senator and a member of the State Tax Commission under the Governor J. Y. Sanders Administration, as well as state representative of Obion County, Tenn., where he lived before moving to Louisiana in 1903. Mr. Oglesby was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Winnfield Rotary Club, and a member of the Louisiana Bar Association. Mr. Oglesby was keenly interested in civic, religious, and political affairs, and during his lifetime attended two National Democratic Conventions in Baltimore and in San Francisco, two Rotary International conventions in Minneapolis and Dallas, and one General Conference of the Methodist Church South, held in Winnfield, at which time he represented the Louisiana Conference. Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Churh at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 1963, with the pastor, Rev. R. H. Staples officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were Robert Heard, James Russell, Dalton Martin, Tracy Harrel, all of Winnfield; Joe Kelly of Oak Grove; Thomas Leigh and O. R. Lewis of Monroe; and Dan Flemming of Ferriday. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Winnfield Bar Association. Survivors are a son, Jack E. Oglesby, Winnfield; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Long, Winnfield, Mrs. John Cahill and Mrs. Harry Gist, of Covington; and five grandchildren.
