Parker was accidentally fatally wounded in the head with a .22 calibre rifle by a playmate, Billy Verret, age 10, while a group of neighborhood children were playing "cowboy" last Friday. The accident occurred while the children were playing in the home of L. R. Thomas across from the Parker home on South Jones Street at 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Thomas both had left their homes and the childre were told to remain on the Parker house porch and play. Accustomed to playing between the two houses they moved to the Thomas house where the .22 rifle was picked up by young Verret in play. The rifle had just been loaded that morning and through oversight the cartridges had not been removed. Other children in the home at the time of the accident were Betty Sue Parker, age 8, sister of the accident victim, and Henry Thomas, 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Thomas. After the shot had been fired accidentally Billy Ray ran toward his home and fell in the street. He was taken to a local clinic where he died in a few minutes. Funeral services for the child were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Minden with the Rev. E. H. Kirkpatrick officiating and interment was in the Minden Cemetery. Pallbearers included P. Hugh Mercer, Lee J. Grigsby, Houston Gates, and E. E. Prince. Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Parker, one brother, Edward Parker, and three sisters, Frances, Bobby Nell, and Betty Sue. Billy Verret, who lives in Raceland, was visiting his grandmother, Mrs. W. A. Boone, who with her two daughters, Misses Inez and Elizabeth Boone, attended the funeral rites.
