Payne, Former Winn Sheriff Dies In Santa Fe, N. M. Burial At His Home In New Mexico; Sheriff Here During 1912-16 Jackson J. Payne, 70, former sheriff of Winn Parish, died in Santa Fe, N. M., Monday morning after a long illness according to news reports reaching relatives and friends here this week. The deceased was born in Grant Parish one of nine sons of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. S. Payne of Verda. The nine sons formed a baseball team and were known throughout this section as the Payne brothers baseball nine. He was elected sheriff of Winn Parish in 1912 and served four years, retiring from that office in 1916. In 1919 he moved with his family to Albuquerque, N. M. where he resided until his death. Death came to him at the house of his son, Carroll T. Payne, in Santa Fe, N. M. Burial was in Albuquerque Wednesday following his death. Surviving are his widow, one son, Carroll T. Payne of N. M., four brothers, Jesse L. Payne, Urania, O. U. Payne, Pineville, Joe Payne, Pollock, and Clem Payne, Meeker; four sisters, Mrs. S. E. Richardson, Shreveport, Mrs. George Durham, Liddieville, Mrs. Ellis Wallace, Verda, and Mrs. Emily Bagwell, DeRidder.
