All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: September 9, 1943 Winn Parish Enterprise Burial Rites For George Bell Payne Held Here Monday Funeral services for George Bell Payne, 35, former chemistry professor of the Winnfield High School, and medical student at Louisiana Medical Center, New Orleans, were held Monday afternoon, September 6, 1943, at the family home, Maple Street. The Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor of the Baptist Church and the Rev. Alwin Stokes, Presbyterian minister, were in charge of the services. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were W. D. Walker, H. O. Schwartz, Houston Gates, Jesse Corley, B. G. Pasco, and Joe Heard, Jr. A native of Winnfield, Mr. Payne is the son of Mrs. G. A. Payne and the late G. A. Payne, for many years a postmaster here. Graduating from Louisiana College in 1927, he taught school two years in Rapides Parish and was nine years instructor in chemistry in the Winnfield High School. Resigning this position he entered Louisiana Medical Center to study medicine but was forced to retire three months before his graduation because of ill health. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his mother, and a sister, Miss Willie Gertrude Payne, both instructors in the Winnfield High School, one brother and sister in law, Mr. and Mrs. Lansing Payne, and one niece, Elizabeth Payne.
