Payne, Sr., 82, Dodson, Succumbs In Ruston Feb. 12 Funeral services for J. B. "Brack" Payne, Sr., 82, who died in a Ruston hospital Saturday, feb. 12, were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Dodson Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev. L. G. Shaw officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Roy Grant of Bernice and the Rev. R. H. Johnson of Ruston. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were five grandsons, Newt, Robert, and C. B. Payne, Charles Strong, Chester Hemperley; two nephews, Edwin and Jack Payne, and a very close friend, Clayton Norred. Mr. Payne was born in the Hudson community Feb. 27, 1873, and was married to Miss Della Gaar, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Gaar. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in January of this year. Eight children were born to this union, two of who preceded him in death, L. M. Payne, who was mayor of Dodson when he died, and W. B. Payne, prominent sawmill owner and operator. Mr. Payne was a successful merchant, timber estimator and buyer, sawmill, gin, and farm owner and operator. He served his parish as a police juryman, school board member, and in other capacities. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church and was one of the founders of the interdenominational Hudson Camp. He was active until March, 1952 when he was stricken with paralysis. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Della Payne; four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Hemperly, Winnfield; Mrs. Mildred Strong and Mrs. Earl Hain, West Monroe; Mrs. Bernice Colvin, Ruston; two sons, J. B. Payne,, Jr., DeRidder, and J. L. Payne, Winnfield; 17 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
