All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: April 25, 1952 Winnfield News-American Mrs. Mattie Philen Succumbs At Age 56 On Last Friday Mother of Four Was Winn Parish Native, Resident of Atlanta Funeral services were held at the Atlanta Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 1952 for Mrs. Mattie Philen, 56, of Atlanta, who died April 18 in a local hospital. Rites were conducted by Rev. Earnest Walker, pastor, assisted by the Rev. H. J. Mott, pastor of the Laurel Heights Baptist Church, and interment was in the Sardis Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Born in Winn Parish October 17, 1895, Mrs. Philen was a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Cecil Philen of Atlanta; three daughters, Madeline Philen of Atlanta, Mrs. H. T. Burford of Gloster, and Mrs. J. C. Key of Sulphur, and four grandchildren. Pallbearers were W. L. Irvin, Reece Ray, Walter Irvin, Dewitt Collins, Hezzie Irvin, and James Irvin, all nephews of the deceased. (This obituary names her as "Nettie" Philen, which I think is erroneous)
