All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: February 25, 1943 Winn Parish Enterprise Death Claims Mrs. Wessie Porter Of Atlanta Feb. 20 Funeral services for Mrs. Wessie Porter, 58, justice of the peace of Ward Six, Winn Parish, were held at the Atlanta Church Sunday afternoon, February 21, 1943, with the pastor, Rev. Ray Collum, and Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor of the Winnfield Baptist Church, officiating. Acting as pallbearers were H. A. Gresham, C. H. Ferguson, E. G. Ferguson, L. Jennings, Guy McElroy, and Edward Shumake. Mrs. Porter, who had been ill for several weeks, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Howard Sowers, in Winnfield Saturday. Born November 22, 1884, in Lincoln Parish, the daughter of the late J. W. and Rebecca Vance, Mrs. Porter moved to the Atlanta Community at the age of one year. She lived her entire life in this parish, where she taught school, and later at the death of her father, succeeded him as justice of the peace of that ward. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church and was active in Home Demonstration club work. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Howard Sowers of Winnfield; two nephews, Captain Melvin Sowers, stationed in the South Pacific, and Ensign W. V. Sowers of New York, N. Y.; and one niece, Miss Dorothy Jean Sowers, of Winnfield.
