Dr. Starks Porter, local physician, died at his home Sunday at 2 a.m. following an illness of two weeks duration. Funeral services were held at West Union Baptist Church where interment was made at five o'clock Sudany afternoon, Rev. W. N. Grice pastor of West Union Church and Rev. J. A. McMurray, Baptist minister, both life long friends of the deceased, conducted the services. Dr. Porter was a member of one of the oldest and most highly respected families of the parish. His parents (both deceased) were Mr. and Mrs. I Porter, who lived near Winnfiled where Dr. Porter was born June 19, 1872, being 54 years, 11 months and 23 days of age at the time of his death. When fifteen years of age Starks as he was called by his friends united with the Union Baptist Church and several years after reaching his majority he was licensed to preach by this same church. After a year or so in the ministry he decided that his calling was to the medical profession and soon after he entered the medical school at Memphis, Tennessee, later engaging in the practice of his chosen profession at Williana and Bentley. Following several years at these places the doctor decided to locate at Goldonna and from there spent several years at Calvin because of its central location to the territory of his practice. About three years ago, Dr. Porter moved to Winnfield where he remained until his death last Sunday. May 8, 1904, Dr. Starks Porter was married to Miss Jennie Hall and she with their three children survive him. The children are Bernice, who is now Mrs. Glen Anderson, of Monroe, Russell, age 18 and Barbara age 9, bothe of whom live at home. The other surviving relatives are three sisters and three brothers; Mrs. Susie Godfrey, West Monroe; Mrs. Barbara Ryder, Bunkie, La.; Mrs. Grady Collins, Monroe; Messrs Roddin, Hezehiah and John Porter all of Winnfield, Rt. 2.
