All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Rarden Porter, Obit November 27, 1953, Winn Parish Enterprise Rardon Porter, 83, Winn Pioneer, Buried Saturday Rardon Porter, 83-year-old retired farmer and life-long resident of Winn parish, died at his home five miles east of Winnfield Friday morning, November 21, 1952 at one o'clock, following a heart attack. He had been deer hunting on four days previous to his death and was ill for only a short time Friday morning. Mr. Porter was born on September 2, 1869 and had lived on the same farm throughout his entire life. He was a successful farmer and stock raiser. In Winn's early days, he hauled freight by ox team from Winnfield to Columbia for Morris Bernstein, local merchant. He was a member of the Old Union Baptist Church, where he had been an active worker for 60 years. A Mason for 58 years, he was a member of Eastern Star Lodge 151 at Winnfield and served as Tyler for 21 years. He was a Master Mason. Mr. Porter helped organize the Democratic executive committee in the parish. Funeral services were held in the Old Union Church Saturday, NOv. 22, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Officiating were Rev. John J. Gayley, Baptist pastor from Hammond; Rev. J.L. Holt, Union Baptist pastor; Rev. Alvin Stokes of Winnfield, and Rev. Rambin of Jena. A Masonic burial was conductted by Joe Mitchell. Pallbearers were P. K. Able, H. L. Boyett, Elmo Frazier, W.U. Drewett, J. R. Harrison, and Ralph L. Moseley. All members of the Eastern Star Lodge were honorary pallbearers. Hixson Brothers Funeral home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Artie Puckett Porter, to whom he had been marrried 60 years; five sons, George, Pierce, and J.I. of Winnfield; 18 granchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, John Porter and H. Porter of Winnfield, and three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Reider of Winnfield; Mrs. A. Godfrey and Mrs. G.M. Collins of Monroe.
