All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** >From the July 14, 1933 Winnfield News-American James Tillett Porter, Civil War Veteran, Dies Here Monday a.m. James Tillett Porter, 90 year old Civil War Veteran, died at his home near Winnfield at 5 o'clock Monday morning, July 10, following an illness of about three weeks. Funeral services were held at Sardis Cemetery at five o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. W. D. Sherwood, pastor in charge. Although born in Georgia, Mr. Porter came to Winn Parish at an early age and has been a resident of this community for more than fifty years. He is widely known in this and the Sardis community. He was a member of the Police Jury for several years and was a devout member of the Sardis Baptist Church for fifty years, attending all services until feeble health made attendance impossible. The deceased is survived by four children, Albert Porter, Callie Porter, Jeff Porter, and Mrs. J. S. Eagles, all of Winnfield, and one sister, Mrs. B. E. Barton, also of Winnfield.
