A 9 year old Winnfield boy drowned Sunday night in Black Lake during a family
reunion, Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Norm Fletcher said.

Fletcher said Jerry Wayne Powell, Jr., and three other youths ranging in age
from 11 to 14 were thrown into the lake when their boat capsized.  The other
three, all of Winnfield, swam to shore.

There was no adult supervision or life jackets in the boat, the sheriff said.

Fletcher said the accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.  Sheriff's
department diver Deputy Mark Fernbaugh recovered the body at 6:45 p.m. in 10
feet of water approximately 100 feet from shore.
