Cdr., USN, retired of Natchitoches, were held Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Natchitoches. Officiating was Rev. Ken Roy. Full military graveside rites were held at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. Mr. Powell, 81, died on Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Natchitoches Parish Hospital. Mr. Powell was a native of Winn Parish. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict with the U. S. Navy and was a military liaison for the Navy after World War II, serving for 21 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Natchitoches, Knights of Columbus Council #1357 4th degree knight, past faithful navigator and past grand knight for the council; member of Louisiana Pecan Growers Association and awarded Man of the Year and named to the Pecan Growers Hall of Fame in 1998. He was given the City of Natchitoches Patriotic Award. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Dement of Natchitoches, a daughter and son-in-law, Octavia (Puddy) and Michael Ray Bowen of Natchitoches; three step daughters, Brenda Gail Chase of Susanville, Calif., Lanna Sue Emert of Chino, Calif., and Ruth Caroline Abru of Sausburg, Mass.; a sister, Dora Anne Knoll of Arcadia, Calif.; a brother, Charles Miller Powell of Mt. Home, Idaho; two grandchildren, Geneva A. Settle and husband Daniel of Natchitoches and Kimberly R. Covington and husband Brent of Mansfield, Texas; two step-grandchildren, Micah Chase and Rhonda Rene Chase of Susanville, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, John Michael Settle and Anise Danielle Settle of Natchitoches. A rosary was recited on Tuesday. Pallbearers were Sam Hill, Ronald E. Vidrine, Ray Ponthieux, Burt Boyd, Rodrick Knoll and Charles Roque. Honorary pallbearers were J. B. Young, Dr. J. T. Melancon and Charles Smith.
