Dead is Vampell Powell, an employee at the L. L. Brewton mill here, and Izola Bangs, Natchitoches Parish. The accident occurred about 11:35 p.m. on U. S. Hwy. 71 about three miles south of Clarence when an auto driven by David Gunter, 33, Pineville, smashed in a pickup truck. Injured were Gunter; his wife; their son, David, 6; the Rev. T. W. Terral, 28; his wife and their son, Tommy, all of Pineville; and S. H. Holder, Negro. The Gunter auto, traveling south, struck a pickup truck belonging to the Negroes which had been parked partially on the highway, according to investigating officers. The truck's left wheels were on the pavement, officers said, and an auto driven by other Negroes had parked in the same manner on the other side of the highway. As Gunter's car approached the Negroes' auto started to move and its lights blinded Gunter, officers said. His car crashed into the rear of the truck, knocking it about 300 feet down the highway where it left the road and came to rest against a railroad embankment. Officers said a group of Negroes were standing around the pickup talking when the crash occurred. All of the injured were hospitalized in Natchitoches.
