All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: November 20, 1947 Winn Parish Enterprise Husband Of Winn Girl Killed In Fall From Pole Hiram Jose Perez, 26, husband of the former Betty Jo Box of Winnfield, was almost instantly killed when he fell from the top of a light pole at the football field in Ferriday, La., on November 13, 1947. Mr. Perez, who was employed by the Louisiana Power and Light Company, had climbed the high pole at the field to repair the line in preparation for a football game the following night. Upon reaching the top he fastened his leather safety belt and had started on the repair job when the belt apparently broke and he fell approximately 40 feet to the ground. He passed away a few minutes later. Funeral services were held at the Hixson Brothers chapel at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, with Rev. Fred S. Flurry officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. The body had laid in state at the funeral home until the time of the services. Mr. Perez, a veteran of three years service in the U. S. Army during World War II, was a native of Puerto Rico. He was born at Guayama, Puerto Rico, on December 13, 1920. At the time of his death Mr. and Mrs. Perez and their small son resided at Ferriday. He is survived by his widow; one son, Richard Hiram Perez; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jose M. Perez of San Juan, Puerto Rico. His mother and younger brother attended the funeral after making the long trip from the West Indies. Pallbearers were employees of the Louisiana Power and Light Company. They were C. L. Preston, Jack Gaar, Jim Gregory, J. C. Tarver, Harold Burley, and Henry Sheppard.
