Victor E. Prince

Graveside funeral services were held for Victor E. Prince, 63, of Fort Valley,
Georgia in Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley on Friday, March 2, 1984.  Mr.
Price died Thursday morning, March 1, of respiratory illness.

He was a native of Louisiana, having grown up in the Fellowship Community near
Sikes.  He was a graduate about 1936 of the Gaars Mill High School and his
parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Price.  He was a veteran of World War
II.

After graduation from the University of Maryland, Mr. Prince worked in 1948
for the U. S. Department of Agriculture and was employed in 1954 at the U. S.
Horticultural Field Laboratory in Fort Valley, Ga.  He released 15 peach
varieties and initiated a breeding program to develop plum cultivars.   Many
of his cultivars have made marks on the international peach production.  His
peaches have been produced on six continents and his selections and crosses
will continue to influence cultivars.  He has published numerous research
reports on the short life of peach trees and factors affecting peach
production.

Mr. Prince was a member of the American and International Horticultural
Society and the American Pomological Society.  He received numerous awards in
recognition of his work with the USDA.  The Georgia Peach Council recognized
Mr. Prince's contributions with the "Mr. Peach Award" and a special
recognition on retirement in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Irene L. Prince of Fort Valley, Ga.; one
daughter, Mrs. Vicki P. Oglesby of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Thelma Sanders
of Minden, La., and Nelda Rae Prince of Shreveport, La.; and one brother,
Edsel Prince of Dodson, La.
