Zion Academy, Dies One Mile from Birthplace on March 23 (From the Winnfield News-American, April 4, 1947) Thomas (Uncle Tom) Quinalty, Winn Parish pioneer and a church and educational leader in his community since reconstruction days, died on the evening of March 23 at his Mt. Zion home just a mile from the place where he was born five years before the Civil War. At 91, he was one of the oldest persons of this section, but his death was preceded by an illness of short duration. Always interested in the progress of his community, "Uncle Tom" had donated a portion of his land for the Mt. Zion church and cemetery, and during his lifetime he had helped to build three church buildings in that section. He was one of the founders of the Mt. Zion Academy, one of the first institutions of higher learning in North Louisiana. "Uncle Tom" became a Christian early in life, and at the time of his death he was one of the oldest Methodists in Louisiana. He served on the board of directors of his church during the entire time of its existence, and as trustee and steward continuously for more than 30 years. In 1886 he was married to Miss Martha Miller, daughter of the late H. F. Miller, pioneer Baptist minister of this parish. She died in 1939. Funeral services for "Uncle Tom" were conducted at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church at 3 p. m. Tuesday with the following ministers, his pastor and former pastors, in charge, assisted by Judge Cas Moss; the Rev. Tillman A. Brown, Rev. Lula Wardlow, Rev. F. G. Wardlow and Rev. M. B. Adkins, Baptist preacher. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Edmonds Funeral Home. Pallbearers were J. W. Gunn, Henry Keiffer, J. Cheston Stevens, Clyde Sheffield, Emmett Horn, Lish Neal, Jessie Lee Cardozier, and Lloyd J. Harrison. Many of his thousands of friends attended the funeral, and the bountiful floral offerings attested to the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him. Surviving "Uncle Tom" are two sons, J. T. Quinalty of Baton Rouge and J. W. Quinalty of Montgomery; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Varnado of Corbin and Miss Lucy Quinalty of Montgomery, and a number of nieces and nephews. Attending the funeral from Winnfield were Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Shaw, Sr., R. D. Cantwell, Sheriff Bryant Sholars, Mayor Eli Harrell, Supt. R. L. Terry, Marvin Wyatt, H. E. Crawford, Judge Moss, Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer McCollum, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. George Bolton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Bolton, Mrs. Lucy McBride, and Mrs. J. W. Box. Other relatives and friends from out of town attending were Rev. Lucian Smith and Miss Mattie Dee Douins of Pineville, Sheriff and Mrs. Gillis bowen and Mr. and mrs. Crawford Stevens of Colfax, Rev. and Mrs. J. G. Keiffer of Shreveport, and Mr. and Mrs. Willard Kilpatrick of Jonesboro. (The above submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
