Ray, PJ Member, Dies Of Heart Attack Charles W. Ray, 56 year old president of the Winn Parish Police Jury, and long time Winnfield barber, died early Monday afternoon of a heart attack. He died in a local hospital about 1 p.m. after suffering the attack early Monday morning at his home on Atlanta highway. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Brown Cemetery in the Sardis community under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Pallbearers, members of the Police Jury, were Jack Rice, Willard Harlan, Machel Mayes, Henry Kieffer, B. D. Lashley, W. H. Collins, Gus Crawford, and Grover Jeter, with other P. J. members, and members of Mr. Ray's Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church serving as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Ray was serving his second term as Police Jury member from Ward One, having been elected first in 1952. He was elected in the first primary in both 1952 and 1956 and would have completed a year as president of the parish governing body next month. He was born October 12, 1901, in Atlanta, the son of Warren and Jemima Barton Ray. He was a barber here for more than 30 years with exception of a short time in the grocery business a number of years ago. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Ray of Winnfield; three daughters, Mrs. Sam Canerday of Winnfield, Miss Charlene Ray of Beaumont, Texas, and Miss Cecile Ray of Winnfield; one son, Donald Ray of Shreveport; three grandchildren, one brother, Vernon Ray of Jackson, Miss., two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Ross and Mrs. Mollie Fannin, both of Winnfield. Out of town friends and relatives attending the funeral were Vernon Ray, Jackson, Miss., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ray, Charles Barton of Shreveport; Carvel Prince of Oil City, Mrs. Bill Myrick and Martha, Mrs. Ione Ray of Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Brown and Julius of Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ray of Zwolle, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Irving and children of Monroe, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Barton and children of Thibodaux; Mrs. Oscar Barton of Olla, Mrs. Edd Smelley of Hodge, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Hayes and Shelley of Minden, Mr. and Mrs. Kieffer of Montgomery, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Page of Lake Charles, Frank Amberg of Dry Prong, Mrs. Robert Howell of Ruston, Donald Spencer of Beaumont, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Lashley of Verda.
