Reed, 24 years old, of Vivian, La., was drowned in Dugdemonia bayou, near this place, this afternoon and the body had not been recovered at 8 o’clock. Preparations are now being made to dynamite the stream, with the hope of bringing the body to the surface. Reed is said to own a small telephone exchange at Vivian and one in the Crichton oil fields. His parents live at Gibsland. Reed was enjoying a vacation with friends in Winnfield and a party went out for a picnic this morning. When they went in bathing in the bayou, which is swollen from the recent heavy rains and has a very swift current, Reed was noticed by the other members of the party to be in distress. Every effort was made to reach him but his body did not rise after sinking the second time. The tragedy is particularly sad on account of the fact that Reed was visiting his sweetheart, it is said, who is connected with the telephone exchange here, and she was also taking a vacation and was a member of the party and saw him go down. It is rumored they were engaged. Reed is said to have been a model young man and well connected. Parents Live at Gibsland.
