J. Rice, 83, Held At Sardis Dec. 14 Funeral services for T. J. Rice, Sr., 83, prominent citizen of the Sardis Community almost all of his life, were conducted at the Sardis Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, with the Rev. W. C. Bounds of Sardis and Rev. E. B. Barton officiating. Interment was in Sardis Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Impressive Masonic rites were conducted at the grave with J. W. Mitchell of Winnfield in charge, assisted by members of the Winnfield and Montgomery Masonic Lodges. Mr. Rice died of a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. W. Harrington on Natchitoches Highway near Winnfield about 8 o'clock Tuesday morning. He was born August 4, 1867 in Natchitoches Parish, and had lived practically all his life in Sardis Community. He had taken a very active part in civic, church, and Masonic activities. He had been a member of the Sardis Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, F. & A. M. in Winnfield. Surviving are three sons, T. J. Rice, Jr., V. E. Rice, and L. P. Rice, all of Winnfield; three daughters, Mrs. H. W. Harrington, Winnfield, Mrs. Edna Warden, Fredericksburg, Texas, and Mrs. Bell Evans, Winnfield; one sister, Mrs. J. T. Collier of Grayson; 22 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Norman A. Smith, B. O. Bass, J. W. Barr, W. B. Anders, G. W. Evans, and Ex Edmonds.
