Funeral services for Bruce "Gunboat" Smith, 70, of Winnfield, have tentatively been set for Friday, August 31, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Mr. Smith, who retired last year from the Louisiana Highway Department, died Monday of a heart attack enroute from a fishing lodge near Lake City, Colo., to a hospital. He had accepted a position at the lodge for three months. Mr. Smith was a native of Stephens, Ark., and had moved with is parents as a boy to Louisiana in 1902. A veteran of World War One, he was discharged with the rank of captain. He attended Louisiana State University and graduated from Louisiana Tech. Widely known as a football player and coach, Mr. Smith taught and coached in Winnfield in 1923-24. He had also coached football teams in Arcadia and Ruston. During World War Two, he was employed in defense industries in Tennessee. Surviving are his widow, the former Elmer Hatten; one brother, Charlie Smith of Winnfield; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Towery of Crockett, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
