L. Smith, Sr., Held Friday Mrs. A. L. Smith, Sr., the former Ottice Barnes, 74, died Thursday, August 28, 1969 at her residence in Winnfield. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Harwell Allen, on the Dodson Highway. Last rites were conducted at the First Baptist Church Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the pastor, Rev. Thomas Cox, officiating. Burial was in the old Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were L. L. Brewton, Sr., Bill White, Richard Heard, Russell Terry, Dr. George M. Rodgers, J. G. Russell, V. Matt Milam and Dudley Shell. A self-educated person, Mrs. Smith was widely known for her activities in various educational and religious endeavors. She organized and promoted the Delphian Society for the study of history and literature in Winnfield many years ago, and then served as president of the State Delphian Society. She was also instrumental in organizing a Winnfield Parent-Teacher Association which she kept active for many years. During this time she was honored by being selected as president of the State Parent-Teachers Association. Mrs. Smith, together with her sister in law, Mrs. A. L. Ladner, now of Ponchatoula, and the late Mrs. H. B. Bozeman, worked for and secured the establishment of a Winn Parish Library. In addition to promoting educational groups, she led the missionary societies of the First Baptist Church in Winnfield and served as president of the group for a number of years. For 50 years she taught Sunday School classes in the church of which she was a member. Mrs. Smith was associated with the Red Cross over the years and during World War II was on the Rationing Board. She had long been an active member of the Eastern Star and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. An accomplished writer, Mrs. Smith at one time served as editor of the Winnfield News American. For a number of years before her retirement she was employed by the Winn Parish School Board. She was the widow of the late A. L. Smith, Sr., vice president of the Tremont & Gulf Railway, which is now part of the Illinois Central Railway system. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harwell Allen, Winnfield; two sons, Albert L. Smith, Jr. of Baton Rouge and Leonard A. Smith of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Dr. Hasson Barnes of Ruston and Dr. A. W. Radescich, Pineville; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
