Staples, Former Winn Minister, Dies Funeral services for the Rev. R. H. Staples, 76, of Winnfield, were held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Castor Methodist Church with burial in the Old Castor Cemetery. Officiating were the Rev. Fred Flurry, the Rev. John Sewell, the Rev. Ed Thomas, and the Rev. Bentley Sloane. The Rev. Mr. Staples died about 6 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 1973, in the Highland Hospital after a short illness. He was a native of Castor and had been a resident of Winnfield for about six months. He was a member of the Methodist Conference and had been a Methodist minister for 45 years. He had pastored churches in Marion, Choudrant, Trout, Coushatta, New Iberia, West Monroe, Bastrop, Winnfield, and Castor. The Rev. Mr. Staples was one of the founders of the Louisiana Moral and Civic Foundation. He had retired after serving in Winnfield, but then pastored the Castor Methodist Church for 10 years before moving to Winnfield for the second time. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Staples; one daughter, Myrna Rickerson of Alexandria; and one sister, Mrs. W. M. Hamm, Sr., of Shreveport. Pallbearers were Wayne Hall, Lexie Hall, Leo Hall, Bob Hamm, Bill Hamm, and Edward Pickett. The Methodist ministers of the Louisiana Conference served as honorary pallbearers.
