All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 11, 1984 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Joe Sanders Funeral services for Metropolis, Illinois Mayor Joe Sanders, 61, were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 1984, at the Baptist Church in Metropolis where he was a member. Burial followed in Massoc Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mayor Sanders died at 10:00 p.m. Sunday, January 1, 1984, after remaining in a coma since October 19, 1983 when he suffered a severe heart attack and stroke. He had served 3 « years as mayor and 12 previous years as an alderman. He was very active throughout his lifetime with civic and community affairs. Members of the community have honored him with numerous prayer vigils during his extended hospitalization. Survivors include his wife, one son, a granddaughter, and six sisters. He is also survived by two aunts, Mesdames Gladys Applewhite and Doris Houp, both of Winnfield, and a nephew, David Cosby of Monroe.
