The charred body was dug out of the smouldering ruins by Winn deputy sheriffs Wesley Carter and Charlie Crane, and Winnfield fire chief Leonard Horton. The sheriff's department received a call from Atlanta about 2:40 p.m. reporting the fire and stating that it was believed someone was in the house. The deputies drove to Atlanta and called back for the fire truck. Fire Chief Horton happened to be listening in on the radio network and cut in to let them know that he could bring the truck out at once. After the burned house had been cooled down with water, the deputies and fire chief removed the body, which was found between the refrigerator and stove. Cause of the fire was undetermined. The woman's husband, Jesse Sapp, is employed at Gresham's sawmill near Atlanta and was away from home at the time of the fire.
