Shell Of Dodson Dies In Local Hospital Charles L. Shell, well known and respected retired Winn Parish educator and school board member died this morning at 1:05 a.m. in a local hospital, at the age of 79. Mr. Shell, who had been in ill health for the past several months, suffered a stroke yesterday at his home in Dodson. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Dodson Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Hood's Mill, near Chatham. Conducting the services will be Dr. T. W. Gaver of Franklinton. Dr. Gaver was a roommate of Mr. Shell's in college more than 50 years ago and they have been lifelong friends. It was Mr. Shell's request that he conduct his funeral. Masonic rites will be held at the graveside by the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 of Winnfield, of which Mr. Shell was a member in good standing. Mr. Shell was born December 14, 1874 in Jackson Parish, son of the late William P. and Millie Hearne Shell. He received his early education in Jackson Parish and Gaar's Mill in Winn Parish and was a graduate of the State Normal College, now Northwestern State College, at Natchitoches. He became a pioneer in Winn Parish education and has taught hundreds of Winn and Jackson Parish people in schools at Dodson, Gaar's Mill, and other places. He was principal of the Dodson School from 1903-1907 when it became the first state accredited high school in Winn Parish. Following this, he served as superintendent of schools in Jackson Parish for several years and later returned to teaching, holding schools in several places in this parish. In all, his teaching experience totaled around 40 years. Following his retirement from the classroom, Mr. Shell was elected Winn Parish School Board member from Ward Seven, serving from January, 1937 through December, 1948, when he retired, choosing not to seek reelection. Mr. Shell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maggie Walker Shell, whom he married in 1907; two daughters, Mrs. James Kincade and Mrs. Claude Kincade, both of West Monroe; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Alice Shell of Winnfield; four brothers, D. F. Shell of Winnfield, W. E. Shell of Kelly, J. J. Shell of West Monroe, Rev. J. W. Shell of North Braddock, Pa. Two brothers are deceased, the late Judge J. T. Shell and the late S. B. Shell, both of Bastrop. Mr. Shell was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, Winnfield, a member of the Woodmen of the World, and was formerly a member of the Dodson Masonic Lodge.
