W. Shelton Eighty Year Old Resident of Winnfield Succumbs Funeral Services for James William Shelton, 80, who died at his home here Friday afternoon, March 3, at 2:30 o'clock, were held at the First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, with Dr. B. C. Land, pastor, officiating. Assisting were Rev. Alwin Stokes, Rev. G. A. Morgan and Rev. J. H. Keys of Baskin. Interment followed in the Sardis cemetery. Active pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased: Eugene Keyes, Roscoe Shelton, Royd Keys, Clayton Eagles, Marion Shelton, Oscar Barton, Lantrie Hughes and Lynwood Mixon. Honorary pallbearers were: Kenneth Watts, W. L. Smith, Bryant Sholars, Walter Allen, J. L. Durham, P. K. Abel, C. F. Walsworth, Miley Walsworth, B. L. Anderson, J. N. Gates, R. L. Lewis, Dr. J. F. Faith, George Evans, J. A. Porter, Bill Edwards, H. L. Dickerson, R. E. Matthews, J. T. Riffe, J. L. Shelton, Dr. S. C. Fittz, and the Baptist Brotherhood. Born in Mississippi March 10, 1851, (year is actually 1859) James William Shelton came to Louisiana as an infant with his parents. He lived the greater part of his life in the Sardis community and was considered one of the most prosperous farmers in this parish. He was married to Miss Alice Virginia Martin and to this union were born eleven children, seven of them survive. His wife preceded him in death. Eighteen years ago Mr. Shelton came to reside in Winnfield. He had joined the Sardis Baptist church at the age of 16 and when he moved to Winnfield he brought his leter (sic) to this church. Although inactive, he was a deacon of the church at the time of his death. Surviving are two sons, M. T. Shelton of LeCompte, and Riley B. Shelton of Charleston, S. C.; five daughters, Mrs. E. B. Barton, Sardis; Mrs. J. H. Keyes, Baskin; Mrs. A. B. Hughes, Montgomery; Mrs. C. R. Mixon, Pineville; Mrs. Olivia Eagles and Mrs. Hasson Morris, Winnfield; and Mrs. H. L. Preston of Mansfield, Mass.
