Shetley, who was said to have been asleep at the time of the accident, never knew that it occurred. He was knocked unconscious and never regained consciousness. His jawbone was broken, all his teeth broken and knocked out and his features so distorted from bones of the face being crushed that he was not readily recognized when brought into the clinic. It was said that Kenneth Humphries, who was driving the car stated that he fell asleep at the wheel for a moment and was awakened as the car plunged over the embankment. He made an effort to steer the car away from the tree but was unable to do so. On examination, Humphries' injuries were not thought to be serious. About five o'clock Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Roberts of Bossier City and Miss Nell McCullen of Pineville, enroute to Shreveport from Alexandria, passed the scene of the wreckage and found the two young men unconscious by the road side. They immediately turned back and brought the injured men into Winnfield. Haywood Shetley was one of the most popular young men of Winnfield. As an employee in a local grocery store, he was so friendly and accommodating he readily became a favorite. He had a good voice and on last Friday night his song number won second place on the amateur night program sponsored at the local theater by the WPA recreational group. He was on his way home Saturday night when he met Kenneth Humphries, who invited him to go to Hodge with him. The young men were returning from Hodge when the accident occurred that cost Haywood Shetley his life. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church in Winnfield Monday afternoon, Rev. B. C. Land, Rev. K. W. Dodson, and Rev. Alwin Stokes were in charge. Interment was made in the Goldonna Cemetery. Goldonna was the former home of the Shetley family and Haywood had retained his membership in the Goldonna Baptist Church since the removal of the family to Winnfield. Pallbearers were D. Q. Madden, Welby Willis, John Faith, Pat Harrell, Carmen Anderson, and Millard Machen. Surviving relatives are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Labat and Miss Dorothy Shetley, and two brothers, Maynard and Ray Shetley, all of Winnfield.
