He was taken ill with pneumonia and suffered intensely for nine days. All efforts were made to conquer the disease but to no avail. His soul took its flight December 24th, 1937. Judge was the son of J. E. and Roxie Ray Shelton; was born Nov. 19, 1898 near Atlanta, in the Sardis neighborhood and had spent his entire life in this community. His mother died when he was small and for the past twenty-five years he had resided with is step grandmother. He leaves to mourn his loss, his father, J. E. Shelton, three half-brothers, Clarence, Aubrey, and Julius; three half sisters, Mrs. Angie Hyde, Mrs. Ida Hallmark, and Miss Ophelia Shelton, all of the Sardis Community. He also leaves his step grandmother and several aunts and uncles and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. He was a great lover of the sportsmanship of hunting and fishing and has spent many happy hours with his friends in this way. He delighted in the care of the dogs and was always ready for every drive and chase, and will be missed so much among his associates, many of whom came from other sections to join in the sports. He will also be missed in the community and home for his useful life, always being ready to assist those who needed help, never feared work, eager to do his part in anything that confronted him. His body was laid to rest on Christmas morning in the Swindle Cemetery near Sardis. Among a host of relatives and friends, Rev. W. D. Sherwood performed the last rites. Pallbearers were Ballard Smith, Muriel McIlwain, Luther Collins, Mack Barton, J. B. Smith, and O. O. Dickerson. Funeral arrangements were made by Edmonds Funeral Home.
