All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: April 12, 1962 Winn Parish Enterprise-News American Death Claims Former Sheriff Bryant Sholars Bryant Sholars, who served 32 years as a deputy and sheriff of Winn Parish, died about 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, in an Alexandria hospital. He had spent the last several months in a nursing home in Pineville. Mr. Sholars was born in Ward 4 and lived his entire life in Winn Parish. In 1816 he entered the employment of W. T. Heflin, a crosstie producer for the L. and A. Railroad. When in 1916 Mr. Heflin was elected sheriff of Winn Parish, Mr. Sholars became a deputy. He served 12 years in this capacity under Mr. Heflin. In 1928, Mr. Sholars was elected sheriff and served until 1948, 20 continuous years. At that time he ran for re-election and was to face the late C. M. Robinson in a runoff on February 24, 1948. Two weeks before the election, Mr. Sholars announced his withdrawal from the campaign. Since that time, he had lived in retirement in Winnfield. Funeral services were scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield. Burial was scheduled in the Winnfield Cemetery. Mr. Sholars was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M., and the Winnfield Cedar Camp 107 Woodmen of the World. Survivors include a son, Julius Sholars, Baton Rouge; three brothers, Oren Sholars, Dubach; Randall Sholars, Edna, Texas; Louis Sholars, Winnfield; three sisters, Mrs. A. E. Raywinkle, Shreveport; Mrs. Irene Brown, Baton Rouge; Mrs. C. M. Walsworth, Ponchatoula; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Serving as pallbearers were C. M. Heflin, Herman Heflin, H. R. Heard, R. C. Byrnes, Richard Heard, and D. L. Durrett.
