Death Claims One of Winn Parish Pioneer Citizens Wednesday


Mrs. P. J. Shumaker of Beech Creek Has Lived in Winn Parish Since Before Civil
War


The Beech Creek Community suffered the loss of one of her oldest and best
loved citizens last Wednesday morning at ten o'clock, when death came to Mrs.
P. J. Shumaker after an illness of one week.

In Alabama, March 10, 1840 Mrs.  Shumaker was born and soon afterwards her
parents moved to Georgia, a few years later coming to Winn Parish where she
has lived since, being 80 years, 8 months, and 6 days of age at the time of
her death.

She was married to Dr. J. W. Shumaker and five years before the Civil War they
homesteaded a tract of land on which they built a home and lived on the same
place until the death of Dr. Shumaker, 18 years ago; Mrs. Shumaker continuing
her residence on the identical place until her death last Wednesday.

Mrs. Shumaker has been a faithful and consistent member of the Beech Creek
Baptist Church since girlhood and her funeral services were held there
Thursday, with her former pastor, Rev. J. B. Adams of Sikes officiating,
burial taking place afterwards in the Beech Creek cemetery.

The surviving ones of her family are:  Three brothers, Jim Smith and William
Smith of Oklahoma, and E. A. Smith of Pineville; three sisters, Mrs. Flora
Newsom and Mrs. Pony Crain, Chester, La., and Mrs. J. A. Ford, Hickory Valley;
five daughters, 
Mrs. S. J. Harper,  Mrs. J. L. Willis, of Winnfield, Mrs. S. A. Weems, Mrs. W.
H. McCarty, and Mrs. Alice Perry of Flat Creek.

Relatives from Winnfield who attended the funeral Thursday were:  Mr. and Mrs.
J. L. Willis, Mr. Herbert Willis, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willis and children, Mrs.
S. J. Harper and Miss Maude Harper.
