M. Simmons Of Near Sikes Mrs. Sarah Maria Fox Simmons, wife of W. M. Simmons and member of one of Winn Parish's pioneer families passed to her eternal reward Thursday March 30, 1944 at the Baptist Hospital in Alexandria after a few days illness. She was 71 years and 11 months of age and although her health had been poor for the past ten years death came unexpectedly. In 1887 she was married to W. M. Simmons of Sikes and to this union were born nine children, all of whom survive. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 2, 1944 at Friendship Church in the old Mineral Springs Community. Interment was in the family plot there. Judge Cas Moss, a life long friend of the family and Rev. margin Adkins of Calvin officiated. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Sgt. Kermit Crain, U. S. Army, Paris, Texas, Edgar Simmons, U. S. Army, Fort Benning, Georgia, Ray Simmons and C. M. Martin of Orange, Texas, E. C. Gates of Shreveport and Fred Tucker of Sikes. Besides her children, W. V. Simmons, Mrs. E. C. Gates, Mrs. W. A. Crain, and Guy Simmons of Sikes, Mrs. John Martin of West Monroe, Jack Simmons of U. S. Navy, New York City, Horace and P. C. Simmons of Shreveport, and K. C. Simmons of Calvin, twenty-six grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren survive. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Lydia DeLoach and one brother, Belford Fox of Monroe. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Masonic Lodge.
