M. Simmons To Be Saturday Funeral services for W. M. Simmons, 89, who passed away at a Winnfield hospital Thursday, January 31, 1952, after a long illness, will be held Saturday, February 2, at 10 a.m. at the Mineral Springs Church. Burial will follow in the Mineral Springs Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at Edmonds Funeral Home, Jonesboro, until time of the funeral. Born in Caldwell Parish February 10, 1863, Mr. Simmons moved to Winn Parish with his parents at a young age. They settled near Sikes and he later began a long career in public service, being a school teacher in Winn for 44 years. After the state teacher retirement system was established, Mr. Simmons became the first teacher in Winn Parish to retire under its regulations. He served as justice of the peace for Ward Seven for many years, and held that office at the time of his death. A member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Mr. Simmons was active in church work until ill health prevented him. He was also a member of the Masonic order. He was married to Sarah Maria Fox, also a member of a well known Winn Parish family, and to this union nine children were born, all of whom survive him. His wife preceded him in death in 1944. Sons and daughters are, Mrs. John Martin and W. V. Simmons, Monroe; Mrs. W. A. Crain, Fellowship Community; Mrs. E. C. Gates, Sikes; Horace, Jack, and P. C. Simmons of Shreveport; K. C. Simmons of Dodson, and Guy Simmons of Friendship Community. He also leaves 26 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
