E. Simmons, Founder of Joyce Field, Succumbs Caro Enoch Simmons, 68, founder of the Joyce Oil Field, and Winnfield drillling contractor and oil promoter died unexpectedly in a hospital in Fort Worth, Texas Sunday. He and his wife had gone to their home in Ft. Worth for the holidays when he became ill. Last rites were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ft. Worth. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth. Survivors include his widow, four daughters, Mrs. June S. Lively, Mrs. C. W. Smith, and Miss Helen Simmons of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Richard Banks of Dallas, Tex.; a brother, D. J. Simmons of Fort Worth, and a sister, Mrs. A. B. Geren of Wood River, Ill. Mr. Simmons was born in Winnfield and lived here as a youth. Later his family lived elsewhere, but he returned here in the 1940s as a promoter and was the discoverer of the Joyce Oil Field. Mr. H. B. Bozeman, author the weekly column "Winn Parish As I Have Known It" pays tribute to Mr. Simmons in his column this week pointing out the contribution he has made to the area. Attending the last rites from Winnfield were Ashton B. Collier, Kelly Peterson, John Poisso, James Franklin, Jimmy Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Payne, Joe Pilley, and Herman Gardner, the colored porter.
