Smith was killed in a head-on collision Friday, September 24, 1971 on U. S. Highway 167 about three miles north of Winnfield. State Police said Smith's vehicle met head-on with a truck and trailer loaded with pulpwood, driven by John Martin, 20, also of Winnfield. Smith, a 29 year veteran of the Louisiana Highway Department, was named superintendent of Winn Parish about two years ago. He had served as assistant superintendent for many years preceding the appointment. Funeral services were held for Smith at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 26 at the Winnfield First Baptist Church with Reverend Calvin Phelps officiating. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Pallbearers were Mike Smith, Perry Joe Smith, James Hardy Smith, Clyde Smith, Jr., C. R. "Cotton" Long, and Jimmy Long. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Leda Smith; four sons, Benny Smith, Perry H. Smith, Jerry T. Smith, and Samuel Smith, all of Winnfield; four brothers, P. K. Smith, Clyde Smith, Hardy Smith, Jr., and Marshall Smith, all of Winnfield; four sisters, Mrs. Ruby Long, Miss Clotile Smith, Mrs. Brooks Moore, all of Winnfield; and Mrs. John Hudnell of Shreveport; and three grandchildren.
