Smith Dies Sept. 5th At The Age of 88 George E. Smith, 88, retired Department of Highways employee, and former early hand type-setter for newspapers, died at 10:45 a.m. September 5, 1965, in a Winnfield hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home with the Rev. George Ross and the Rev. Robert Gage officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. A native of Winn Parish, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William A. Smith, pioneer settlers, Mr. Smith served as type-setter for the early newspapers located at Dodson, and later at Winnfield. He recently gave two valuable historical documents to Postmaster Eck Bozeman, who sent them to Washington headquarters. One was the commission issued to William A. Smith as postmaster in March, 1868, and the other document was the approved quarterly report of Postmaster Smith from July 1 to September 30. He had sold stamps, envelopes, and wrappers, no parcel post in those days, to the value of $32.65, and his salary for the quarter was $ 9.50. Mr. George A. Smith was a member of the First Methodist Church Men's Bible Class and the Winnfield Kiwanis Club. He was a familiar figure in the Norman Smith Store, and was a cousin to Norman Smith. Surviving are a brother, Jay Smith of San Diego, Calif., and a number of nieces and nephews.
