Smith, Age 93, Of Sikes, Claimed By Death Saturday Youngest Of Trio Of Two Brothers And Sister Over 93 Years Old Percy F. Smith, age 93, died at his home at Sikes early last Saturday morning following an illness of about two weeks. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the family cemetery at Mineral Springs. Complying with one of his requests, last rites were conducted by the Rev. D. Dove of Grayson, and talks were made by Dr. George S. Long, of Dry Prong, W. T. Norman and B. W. Bailey of Winnfield and Senator John James of Columbia. Pallbearers were Floree Smith, George Bookout, Stanley Smith, Eugene Smith, and Wayland Smith, nephews of the deceased. "Uncle Perce" as he was known to a host of relatives and friends was the youngest of a trio of two brothers and one sister who had lived far beyond the allotted three score and ten. He with his brother, John Smith, now 96, and sister, Mrs. Anne Campbell, who is 95, had a joint birthday celebration in July, attended by more than 500 persons. This occasion provoked the comment from Congressman A. Leonard Allen on the floor of the Congress that the combined ages of these three equaled 285 years and was some proof that Louisiana's climate and living conditions were not unhealthful. The Smith family came to Louisiana from Virginia. The family first settled in Catahoula Parish, which later became Winn Parish, where they have since lived continuously. The deceased was interested in the affairs of his community, parish, state, and nation. He served as rural mail carrier in Winn Parish and represented Ward 7 as member of the parish police jury for a number of years.
