Charles L. Smith, Retired, Succumbs Here October 22

Charles L. Smith, 73, retired rural mail carrier and postal clerk of
Winnfield, died in a local hospital Monday, October 22, after a short illness. 
His wife had preceded him in death by a few months.

Last rites were conducted at the First Methodist Church Tuesday at 3 p.m. with
the pastor, Rev. R. H. Staples, officiating.  Burial was in the Winnfield
cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers were John Jackson, Frank Shaw, Don Walsh, Dennis Shell,
James Russell, and Don Thompson.  Honorary pallbearers were employees of the
local post office and his Sunday School class.

A native of Stephens, Ark., Mr. Smith had resided in Winnfield since 1902.  He
had been an active member of the First Methodist Church for many years where
he had taught a Sunday School class and served in other capacities.

Mrs. Smith was engaged in various occupations in his earlier life.  He taught
a rural school for a year in the Calvin area of Winn Parish, once tried his
hand at the printing trade, and operated a theater and confectionary in
Winnfield.  He liked to play baseball and became so proficient at the sport
that he was offered an opportunity with a semi-pro team but turned it down.

He was a scoutmaster in Winnfield for a number of years and served as track
coach at Winnfield High School without pay, also assisted Brother Alwin Stokes
in coaching the football team.

He is survived by a son, Dr. Charles Smith, professor at La. Tech, Ruston; a
daughter, Mrs. Jack Wayant of Greensboro, N. C.; a sister, Mrs. C. D. Towery
of Crockett, Texas; and five grandchildren.
